Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin recently established a new Artificial Intelligence Task Force through Executive Order 30. The task force will comprise 10 experts in AI from Virginia's universities, non-profits, and private corporations.

The group will be charged with advising policymakers on developing Virginia as a leader in AI while ensuring responsible use of the technology, according to the order. The task force will aim to assist state agencies in incorporating AI into their operations, ensuring cost-effectiveness and maximizing benefits.

"When I signed my artificial intelligence executive order, I was very clear that while there are amazing opportunities with AI, there are also inherent risks that we must tackle head-on," Youngkin said. He expressed confidence in the task force's ability to guide Virginia's approach to AI, adding, "Virginia’s world-class universities, companies, and military bases position it to lead the nation in the development of AI."

Reeve Bull, director of the Office of Regulatory Management, highlighted the potential of AI to improve government efficiency, enhance education, and benefit Virginians' lives. He emphasized the task force's role in ensuring the state capitalizes on these opportunities while maintaining appropriate safeguards.

The task force will convene at least twice annually, providing input to both the executive and legislative branches on AI policies, standards, and guidelines. It also will review existing and planned AI uses by state agencies to help ensure return on investment and identifying promising applications for statewide adoption.
