The YMCA of Greater Richmond, in partnership with Henrico County, broke ground for a 21,000-square-foot indoor aquatics center in Eastern Henrico County May 14.

The $10 million facility will be built on six acres of county-owned land beside the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, 1440 N. Laburnum Avenue.

The aquatics center will be built, managed and operated by the YMCA of Greater Richmond, with a contribution provided by Henrico to fund the construction.

The YMCA and Henrico will partner to ensure community access to swim lessons, health and wellness opportunities, and family swim nights for Henrico residents.

The center will also support an expansion of the Learn to Swim program, which the YMCA has been running for 25 years in partnership with area school systems to ensure that every second-grader has the opportunity to learn water safety and basic swimming techniques.

The aquatics center will feature an eight-lane, 25-yard pool and a warm-water instructional pool with zero-depth entry, a family spray area and a waterslide. In addition, the center will include family-friendly locker rooms, retractable spectator seating and parking.

The center will also offer swim lessons, host practices and meets for Henrico high school swim teams and be available for use by Henrico’s youth summer camps and community groups.

County and YMCA officials attended the groundbreaking.

The aquatics center will be open to the public through means-based memberships, daily rates and public swim opportunities. The facility is expected to open in early 2020.
