The Richmond Black Widows, Richmond’s first women’s tackle football team and Virginia’s longest running women’s football team, will play their home games at Hermitage High School this season.

The home-opener is April 27, and the team will host three other games – May 4, May 25 and June 1. All games will start at 6 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. The team also will introduce its new mascot, Betty.

The home-opener will be "Girls in Sports Day," according to team founder Sarah Schkeeper, a veteran player and gold medalist member of 2013 Team USA. All girls 14 and younger who attend the game in a sports uniform will be admitted free and honored at halftime.

"We hold firm to the years of data that show how girls in sports are more successful in school, more likely to attend college and develop leadership skills to help them later in life," Schkeeper said, "and we believe it is our duty, as women in sports, to encourage, uplift and support girls sports whenever we can."
