Legislation to establish a pilot program that would improve veterans’ access to disability compensation and legal assistance services is moving forward, according to the office of its sponsor, Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA-1st District).

The Veterans Collaboration Act passed the House Veterans Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity and now will be considered by the full committee.

If ultimately passed by Congress, the measure would create a pilot program at the Department of Veterans Affairs to help qualified veterans service organizations collaborate with educational institutions to help veterans file disability compensation claims and appeals. It also would make pro bono legal assistance services more accessible to veterans.

“Our men and women in uniform have earned their benefits through sacrifice, service, and hardship, and these benefits must be protected," said Wittman, whose district generally includes Henrico's western half. "I’m proud to see my Veterans Collaboration Act advance, and I look forward to building on this momentum so we can get our veterans the support they deserve."
