Political newcomer Rodney Willett today announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the 73rd House of Delegates District. The seat is currently held by Democrat Debra Rodman, who today announced that she will seek the party's nomination for the 12th District Virginia Senate seat instead.

Willett, vice president of community impact at technology consulting firm Impact Makers, has been a Henrico resident for more than 20 years.

“As a progressive Democrat, I have dedicated my life to making a difference for all Virginians, ensuring no one is left behind," Willett said in a statement. "My professional career has centered on my core values of lifting people up and making organizations and governments more inclusive, accessible, and transparent.

“As member of the House of Delegates, I will fight for access to affordable health care for all. Expansion of Medicaid was an important first step but we need to ensure that all Virginians have access to quality care, including coverage for pre-existing conditions and mental health care.

Willett also plans to champion efforts for preschool for all children and plans that will reduce debt for students who pursue higher education. If elected, he also vowed to work for what he termed "reasonable gun violence prevention measures," including a ban on assault weapons and the implementation of universal background checks.

"Those who are violently mentally ill or have been accused of domestic violence should not have access to firearms," he said.

In addition to his current role as a technology consultant for Impact Makers (a company that donates all its profits to charities), Willett is an entrepreneur and attorney. He has worked with state and local governments to address their management, technology and legal needs.

Willett serves on a number of boards and committees, including Rx Partnership, Children’s Health Insurance Program Advisory Committee and the Richmond Performing Arts Alliance, which he chairs. He and his wife, Lydia Pulley, have three children.
