The Western Henrico Rotary Club recently presented its annual Service Above Self Awards to a police officer and a firefighter for their service to their communities. The presentations took place during the club's Aug. 13 meeting at The Westwood Club.

Henrico Police Officer Phillip Moyer received the award for his work, as well as his efforts with Kelona Hills Farm, a charitable initiative he founded with his wife, Meghan (who attended the ceremony with their one-month-old fourth child). In honor of Moyer, the WHRC made a donation to his selected charity of The Willow Collaborative, which was represented by April Shenk, founder, and her husband, Luke Shenk.

Battalion Chief (Retired) John Shaffer of the Henrico Division of Fire received the award for his service to the community. Although he was not able to attend the ceremony, Henrico Fire Chief Jackson Baynard accepted the award on his behalf. The WHRC also donated money to Shaffer's designated charity, the Henrico Firefighter Foundation, which was accepted by HFF President Stokes Grymes.

WHRC President Mark Deutsch shared additional remarks that included appreciation for Rotarian Brad Reynolds, who chairs the Service Above Self Awards, and for Henrico County Division of Fire Deputy Chief of Operations Jim Courtney and Sgt. James Bupp of the Henrico Division of Police.
