This new adaptation is based on both the current hit Broadway show and the 1992 Academy Award-winning film about the “diamond in the rough” street rat who learns that his true worth lies deep within. Chamberlayne Actors Theatre will present “Fireflies” at 8 p.m. June 17-18 and at 2:30 p.m. June 19 at HATTheatre, 1124 Westbriar Drive in the West End. “Fireflies” by Matthew Barber is based on the novel “Eleanor and Abel” by Annette Sanford. Henrico County will celebrate Juneteenth at Dorey Park on Saturday, June 18 at 4 p.m. The event will include a vendor fair, kids’ zone, food trucks, entertainment and fireworks finale at 9:15 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Juneteenth celebrates enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching the westernmost Confederate state of Texas. The Proclamation went into effect in 1863, but this news was purposefully withheld from enslaved people until the arrival of Union troops in Galveston Bay, Texas on June 19, 1865.
