Learn more about the arctic exploration of the USS Jeannette at a program on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Meadow Farm's Parsons Community Center. The deadly excursion of the USS Jeannette was captained by Virginian Dr. James M. Ambler, who was searching for a route to the North Pole via the Pacific Ocean. Twisted Carrot Farm and Market will host a hot sauce workshop on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Farmers' Market, 6110 Lakeside Avenue. Participants first will learn how to ferment peppers and other ingredients for hot sauce. Then the class will explore different ingredients to spice up the sauce, as well as learn about different styles of hot sauce from the USA and around the world. Attendees will leave with a jar of locally-grown peppers to ferment plus the sauce they have created in class. All supplies are provided. Cost is $65. Click here to register. The Shady Grove Coffeehouse at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 11105 Cauthorne Road in Glen Allen, will present banjo virtuoso Bill Evans on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. Evans was the 2022 recipient of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize and is a member of the American Banjo Music Hall of Fame. During this concert, Evans will present Banjo in America, as well as playing a mini set of duets with his wife Babi. The Banjo in America exposes audiences to over 250 years of American musical traditions. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door; teens 13-18 are admitted at half price, and children 12 and under are free. The Friendship Circle of Virginia will hold its 2nd annual community-wide Disability Expo on Sunday, Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Weinstein JCC. The expo will feature over 40 nonprofit organizations and businesses that provide services and resources for all ages of the disability community. Admission is free and open to all.
