Tom Leonard’s Farmers Market will host a Halloween Movie Night featuring the film “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in the market’s outdoor theater. Goochland-based Slate River Band will perform at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. Led by former Pinecastle recording artist, Michelle Nixon (vocals), and her husband Nick Nixon (guitar), the band is backed up by seasoned musicians like Randy Cook (Honky Tonk Experience/Commonwealth Bluegrass Band). Slate River performs classic and contemporary country music by the likes of Merle Haggard, George Jones, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, and Miranda Lambert. The performance will take place on CACGA’s Center Field outdoor stage. Seating is general admission; bring a lawn chair or blanket. Tickets are $20. Mountainfilm on Tour will come to Crump Park on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Since 1979, the Mountainfilm festival showcases documentary films that celebrate adventure, activism, social justice, environment and indomitable spirit. It takes place annually in Telluride, Colo. Mountainfilm has been on tour since 1999, extending the festival’s reach and delivering inspiring content to audiences around the world. Outdoor activities such as canoeing, knot-tying, bike safety and maintenance, inflatables, rock painting and a fishing game will take place from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Richmond Astronomical Society will have demonstrations, displays and telescopes to use as well. The Shady Grove Coffeehouse at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 11105 Cauthorne Road in Glen Allen, will present Americana singer/songwriters Lana Puckett and Kim Person and Richmond favorite George Turman on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. Puckett and Person are known for their intricate guitar skills and vocal harmonies. They won First Place Country Vocalist Winner in the International American Songwriter Festival/Columbia Recording Artist Search and their song “Cornstalk Pony” was recorded by legendary singer/songwriter, Steve Gillette. Turman has been at the center of the Richmond folk music scene for decades. In addition to playing at the Boathouse for nearly 30 years, he is a regular at the Shady Grove Coffeehouse, Ashland Coffee and Tea and The Tin Pan – all venues that promote listening and give him the chance to showcase his 60s folk-inspired roots. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door; teens 13-18 are admitted at half price and children 12 and under are free. The Virginia Bridal & Wedding Expo will take place Sunday, Oct. 13 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Richmond Raceway Complex. There will be a large variety of wedding professionals to meet with including photographers, florists, bakers, makeup artists, caterers, bands and musicians, DJs, jewelers, event planners, and more. There also will be representatives for gowns and tuxedos, honeymoons, venues, invitations, decor and transportation, among others.
