3 Penny Theatre will present “A Mark Twain Halloween,” featuring professional actor Ray Carver as Mark Twain, at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at The Gayton Kirk Presbyterian Church, 11421 Gayton Road in Henrico’s West End. Come and hear spooky tales of ghosts, witches and spirits with Mark Twain’s unique view of the supernatural. 3 Penny Theatre practices Radical Hospitality and all tickets are pay-what-you-can; each audience member decides their own ticket price. CharacterWorks, a faith-based after-school theater program, will present “Anastasia: The Musical (Youth Edition)” at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. This new musical is about the story of a brave young woman who sets out to discover the mystery of her past after a bout with amnesia. From the twilight of the Russian Empire, to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, Anya is pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her. Anya enlists the aid of a dashing con man and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family. Tickets are $17. Click here for details.


Keep Henrico Beautiful will host the Plant NATIVE! Festival at Crump Park on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. The festival will celebrate the benefits of native plants with a special emphasis on fall planting. There will be a vendor fair and many organizations like the Henricopolis Soil and Water Conservation District, James River Association and the Sierra Club will provide information. Nancy Lawson, author of “The Humane Gardener” and “Wildscape” will speak at 2:30 p.m. Admission is free. Rain or shine. Click here for details.


Lakeside’s 3rd annual Halloween in the Hub will take place Saturday, Oct. 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Hub parking lot, 6913-6945 Lakeside Avenue. The trunk-or-treat event is open to all ages; admission is free for children 13 and younger. Adults and children ages 14+ will be asked to pay $5 to enter; entry will include a raffle ticket and chance to win one of four or five donated baskets. Children are encouraged to wear costumes. Other festivities will include a dog costume contest (judging by the SPCA), haunted house, puppet show, spooky photo booth, live music, a fire hooping event, entry to the Mystic Market in the back lot, and more. SB’s Lakeside Love Shack will provide food and beverages from a limited menu. Alcoholic beverages will be available and permitted in designated areas; drink tickets can be purchased at the entrance. The Junior League of Richmond will present its 18th Annual Touch a Truck event on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Richmond Raceway. This interactive event allows children to see, touch and safely explore their favorite big trucks and heavy machinery, as well as to meet the personnel who protect, serve and build the Richmond community. The event also will feature crafts, area mascots, food trucks, and games. General admission from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. is $12 per ticket or $42 for a family four-pack. VIP admission, which starts an hour earlier at 9 a.m., is $17 per ticket or $59 for a family four-pack. Children under age one are admitted free. Only individual tickets are for sale at the gate on the day of the event. Advance ticket sales end at noon Oct. 20. Proceeds benefit JLR and its community programs.
