AUG 30Kick off the Labor Day weekend with Jazz in the Park from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Dorey Park. The event will feature performances by Calvin Presents, F.R.E.N.S., Victor Haskins, and Plunky & Oneness. The Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 11105 Cauthorne Road in Glen Allen, will host a Texas-style Barbecue at 5 p.m. Music will be provided by The Anvil Brothers with Robin Rio and Jim DeFazio. Tickets are $35 and include a full meal (smoked brisket, BBQ ribs, chicken, sausage, vegan chili, Texas caviar, corn on the cob and watermelon), appetizers, two drink tickets and the concert. Nashville recording artist Chris Young will perform at 6 p.m. at Innsbrook After Hours. Young, a native of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is releasing his fifth major-label album by the age of 30. He has earned six No. 1 singles, seven Gold and Platinum certifications, and nominations for some of the industry’s most prestigious awards. Wilton House Museum, 215 S. Wilton Road, will present Wilton Makers, a summer program that connects audiences with traditional trades and crafts from the 18th and 19th centuries, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Each installment will include coffee and a morning chat with a local artisan who will demonstrate and explain their trade and how it’s kept alive today. The program for August features Michael D. Bartolotta, a designer and photographer who creates unique wet plate collodion tintypes and ambrotypes. Henrico officials will discuss issues related to education in Eastern Henrico during a town hall meeting at Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 2705 Hartman Street, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The meeting, hosted by Fairfield District School Board representative Roscoe Cooper III, who also is the pastor of the church, will address ways to improve support for schools and families in the region. In addition to Cooper, the meeting will be attended by Henrico Schools Superintendent Amy Cashwell, Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas and other leaders and administrators from the school division. Discussion will focus on: academic performance and achievement gaps; addressing perceptions and inequities in Henrico County Public Schools; understanding parents’ challenges and needs; and identifying resources to support families and students at home and at school.


The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen will present a Sunday Brunch Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The market will provide opportunities to shop a variety of farmers’ market and arts market vendors, relax on a picnic blanket on the grass, and enjoy lunch with the family. The event will also include art activities for the kids and live entertainment. Sunday Brunch Markets will continue the first Sunday of each month through November 3. James River Cellars Winery, 11008 Washington Highway in Glen Allen, will present the Harvest Wine & Oyster Festival from noon to 5 p.m. The family- and pet-friendly event will include live music by The Dirty Runaways, food from Gregory’s Grill and OPA Greek food trucks, local vendors and wine from four different wineries. The Weinstein JCC, 5403 Monument Avenue, will present the final Second Stage performance of “Shrek the Musical” at 2 p.m. Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, “Shrek The Musical” is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure that brings all the beloved characters from the film to life on stage.
