MAY 31The Rock & Roll Summer Concert Series kicks off May 31 and continues every Friday through June 28 at The Pad, 2301 Old Brick Road near Aloft Hotel, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The series features a diverse lineup of local musicians, as well as raffles from WBV businesses including acac, Carrabba's Italian Grill, Ray's Water Ice & Frozen Custard, Burger Bach and more. Meadow Farm Museum will present “History in Focus: A Series” on select Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All ages are invited to explore historical topics in detail with staff-led specialty tours. Today’s topic is A Soldier’s Memories – soldiers such as Sheppard Crump of Meadow Farm preserved memories and memorabilia from their days in the war. The 2019 Summer Concert Series at Henrico Theatre will kick off with the Kadencia Orchestra from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Kadencia Orchestra is a 12-piece ensemble that uses Bomba, Plena and Salsa to promote Afro-Puerto Rican music and culture. Henrico Recreation and Parks will host the annual Celebrate Varina event at Dorey Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festival will include live music, games and a vendor fair. For information, email rec-events@henrico.us.


The Dorey Park Farmers Market will open for the season at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Road. The market – open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June through October – features local farmers and artisans selling a variety of fresh produce, baked goods, honey, eggs and locally-made items. Kids are invited to participate in the Power of Produce (POP) Club – a weekly farm-friendly activity at the POP tent starting at 10 a.m. SNAP EBT is accepted. The Relay for Life of Greater Richmond will take place from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Pocahontas Middle School, 12000 Three Chopt Road. A fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life is a community celebration where individuals and teams take turns circling a track relay-style to raise funds and fight cancer. Stavna Ballet, a Richmond-based professional dance company founded in 2010 by Artistic Director Shannon Hunter McConville, will perform at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. June 1 and at 2 p.m. June 2 at the University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts. Stavna Ballet provides an outlet for local artists to express themselves through the art of dance and inspires young minds through engaging and interactive learning experiences. The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen will present a Sunday Brunch Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The market will provide opportunities to shop a variety of farmers’ market and arts market vendors, relax on a picnic blanket on the grass, and enjoy lunch with the family. The event will also include art activities for the kids and live entertainment. Sunday Brunch Markets will continue the first Sunday of each month through November 3. Clarke-Palmore House, 904 McCoul Street, will celebrate National Donut Day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Explore the history of the donut through activities and displays, and discover how war helped the donut grow beyond a regional treat to one all Americans enjoy today. River Road Church, 8000 River Road, will present Choral Evensong with River Road Chancel Choir and Camerata with visiting conductor Huw Williams from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Born in Swansea, Williams is director of music at Bath Abbey in the UK and an award-winning organist and accompanist.
