MAY 24Henrico Recreation and Parks will host Game Night for ages 5-10 at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Drop the kids off for a free evening of games, including basketball, pickleball, air hockey and foosball. The Divine Destiny Step Team at Fairfield Middle School will host its 5th annual Lupus Awareness Step and Dance Showcase at 3 p.m. at the school, 5121 Nine Mile Road. The showcase will feature local step teams, dance teams and cheer teams. There will also be vendors and snacks available to purchase. A portion of the proceeds will support the Lupus Foundation of America and Team Linda’s Angels for the 2019 Walk to End Lupus Now in Richmond Oct. 12.


Gallmeyer Farms will host a Memorial Saturday Celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Berry Patch, 3622 Darbytown Court in Varina. The event will feature fresh local strawberries (pick your own or pre-picked), live music from Cobalt Whiskey and Cisco, food and craft vendors, free hay rides, activities for kids and more. Lupus in Color will hold its 2nd Annual Fun Run & Walk at RF&P Park, 3400 Mountain Road, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Lupus in Color provides education and support to men, women and children of all colors who are battling or are indirectly affected with Lupus. The annual Sandston Memorial Day Parade will start at 1 p.m. at Seven Pines Elementary School on Beulah Road and proceed down Williamsburg Road through Sandston to Confederate Avenue. It will be preceded at noon by a veteran’s recognition ceremony at Seven Pines National Cemetery. Post-parade festivities start at 2 p.m. on JB Finley Road and include live music, children’s activities, food and exhibitor booths. In honor of Memorial Day, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will offer free admission for military personnel and first responders and their dependents with valid ID. Anyone else in the party (non-dependents) will receive half-price admission. There also will be discounts for military personnel and first responders in the Garden Shop and Garden Café. Richmond National Battlefield Park, in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs, is sponsoring a Memorial Day program and wreath-laying to honor and remember those who have died in service to the nation. This annual event will take place at 12 p.m. at the Fort Harrison National Cemetery, located at 8620 Varina Road. The event is free and open to the public. This year’s keynote speaker is Captain Howard L. Baugh (retired), a veteran who served the country in the U.S. Air Force, including two tours in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Following his talk, a wreath will be laid at the grave of Private George A. Buchanan, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fort Harrison. Special music will be provided by the Varina Community Choir.
