The Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks will present the first in its two-part Adventure Series from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Henrico County Administrative Board Room at 4301 E. Parham Road. The topic will be “To Panama, Set Sail.” RVA local Benjamin Moore will share his adventures across the Caribbean as a deckhand aboard the 105-foot gaff-rigged schooner Alliance. Meadow Farm Museum will present “History in Focus: A Series” on select Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All ages are invited to explore historical topics in detail with staff-led specialty tours. Today’s topic is The Life of Widows – learn how the existence of a woman following her husband’s death depended heavily on the kindness of male relatives. Explore how the Sheppard women of Meadow Farm fared as they outlived their spouses, often by decades. Admission is free. For information, email sic@henrico.us.


Sisters In Crime will present an engaging panel discussion featuring four local published authors of mysteries and thrillers – Frances Aylor, Mollie Cox Bryan, Mary Miley and LynDee Walker – at “Mysterypalooza 2019: Paths to Publication” at Libbie Mill Library from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Panelists will discuss their journeys to becoming published authors. Aspiring writers, fans and readers of the All Henrico Reads 2019 title, “After Anna” by Lisa Scottoline, are encouraged to attend. Book sales will be available from Fountain Bookstore. The Shady Grove Coffeehouse will present up-and-coming music group Tellico at 8 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 11105 Cauthorne Road in Glen Allen. Tellico, who is well established in Asheville, N.C.’s thriving roots music scene, combines vocals with dobro, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and other instruments to form a distinctive “Appalachia-cana” sound. Crump Park, 3400 Mountain Road, will host its first drive-in movie – “Christopher Robin” (2018, PG, 104 minutes) – from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Free popcorn will be available. The 2019 VA Comicon returns to the Richmond Raceway from 11 a.m. (VIP ticket holders) or 12 p.m. (general public) to 4:30 p.m. This popular COSPLAY event, locally owned for 28 years, features vendors and exhibitors, a costume contest, panels and more. CharacterWorks, a non-profit after-school youth theater program, will present “The Wizard of Oz” Mar. 9-10 and Mar. 15-17 at The Steward School, 11600 Gayton Road. After a tornado whisks Dorothy Gale of Kansas away to the magical land of Oz, she starts her journey to find the mighty Wizard who has the power to send her home. Featuring the Scarecrow, Tinman, Cowardly Lion and Toto, as well as classic songs like “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” and “Over the Rainbow.” Tickets are $11 to $18. The Richmond Philharmonic will present “Valves of Glory” at 4 p.m. at the Collegiate School, 103 N. Mooreland Road. The concert will feature Rex Richardson, world-traveling musician and professor of trumpet at VCU, who will perform “3 World Winds for Solo Trumpet and Orchestra.” Additionally, Chioke I’Anson, announcer for National Public Radio, will assume the role of speaker in Aaron Copeland’s “Lincoln Portrait” – popular for its use of Lincoln’s own words as narration and its dramatic trumpet lines. The E. Carl Freeman Concert Series at River Road Church will present harpsichordist Daniel Benjamin Sañez from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the church, 8000 River Road. Sañez, director of music and liturgy for the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, will perform works by Louis and François Couperin, Frescobaldi, Froberger, Scarlatti, and Bach.
