JAN 25Virginia Repertory Theatre will present “Huck & Tom and the Mighty Mississippi” at 7 p.m. Jan. 25, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Jan. 26 and at 2 p.m. Jan. 27 at The Children’s Theatre at Willow Lawn. This Virginia Rep original adaptation brings Mark Twain’s two classic American novels into one fast-paced musical adventure down the Mississippi – featuring Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and familiar characters Jim, Becky Thatcher, Aunt Polly and others. The show, suggested for ages 6-12, is approximately one hour in length with no intermission. Single tickets start at $21. The production continues through Mar. 3. Nine Mile Road, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. As a classically trained musician and the first graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Music to earn a degree in performance with the banjo, Bullard has developed a classical repertoire for the five-string banjo. He will be joined by Markus Compton on piano. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at www.henricolive.com. *** Tim Ryan, A&E’s “Dope Man,” will share his story and sign copies of his book “From Dope to Hope: A Man in Recovery” at 6 p.m. at the McShin Foundation, 2300 Dumbarton Road. Ryan struggled with addiction for 30 years before he attended a drug and alcohol treatment program while in jail. After becoming sober, and losing his son to drug addiction, Ryan founded A Man in Recovery Foundation and has dedicated his life to helping addicts transform their lives from dope to hope. The program will include “Dancing Honeymoon,” with songs from the 1920s and 30s; “Numerator,” set to Lou Harrison’s Varied Trio; and “The Trout,” a new work performed to Schubert’s Trout Quintet. ComedySportz pits two teams of professional players against each other in an improv battle for laughs and points as they make up scenes and songs on the spot based off audience suggestions. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will celebrate the opening of “Congo Masks: Masterpieces from Central Africa” with a traveling, interactive pop-up art event at the Center for the Arts at Henrico High School from noon to 3 p.m. CFA students will share their own reflections of the exhibit through visual arts, spoken word, readings, dance and more. The event is free and open to the public. “Congo Masks,” on display through Feb. 24, features more than 130 rare masks from the Congo Basin and represents the creative expression of more than 40 different Congolese cultural groups.
