NOV 9Short Pump Town Center will celebrate Santa’s arrival and the annual grand illumination of holiday décor at 7:30 p.m. in the main plaza. Santa will arrive with his favorite holiday characters and two of his very own elves, along with many other friends and fan favorites during the annual parade. Everyone will then raise their magic wands to help Santa light the 60-foot, walk-thru tree. Magic wands will be distributed at 5:30 p.m. in the Nordstrom Court (while supplies last). The event coincides with the Lakeside community’s Holly Jolly event, taking place Nov. 9-10. Holiday on Parade will feature performances by On the Air Radio Players, Henrico Pops Chorus and the Colonial Dance Club, who will bring the audience into the fun. Godwin Short Pump Players will present “Radium Girls” at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at Godwin High School, 2101 Pump Road. In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, “Radium Girls” traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door. The pow-wow is an opportunity for the public to interact with members from more than 100 Indian tribes and to learn firsthand about rich Native American traditions including dancing, drumming, singing, arts and crafts, and food. Items for sale include jewelry, moccasins, beadwork, rugs, books and paintings. A parade of nations with over 100 American Indians in regalia will take place at noon on Nov. 10. There will be face painting and bow and arrow shooting for kids. Hours are 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 9, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 11. Admission is $8 to $12. The Varina Woman’s Club will present its fourth annual Santa Lunch & Festival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Laurel Hill United Methodist Church, 1919 New Market Road. Enjoy lunch with Santa, games and prizes (tokens for games purchased at the event), vendors, a bake sale and more. Kids can shop for their loved ones at Santa’s Workshop. Walkerton Tavern will present “Remembering the Great War: The Troubled Peace” from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. In June 1919, the Allied nations signed the Treaty of Versailles with Germany, ending the First World War. The treaty forced Germans to admit sole responsibility for the war, imposed a huge indemnity that destroyed the German economy during the early 1920s and humiliated the German people, who vowed revenge. The inaugural Richmond T. Rex Run will be held at 3 p.m. at Dorey Park. The race is free, and open to anyone five years or older. Although inflatable T. Rex costumes are preferred, they are not required; the only expectation is that participants register and be costumed. As the promotional literature puts it, “Other species of dinosaur may participate.” The T. Rex Run will be on a 0.4-mile paved path around the lake at Dorey Park.
