The Henrico Theatre Company will open its 40th season with the musical “Always… Patsy Cline” Sept. 14-30 at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. This tribute to the legendary country singer is based on a true story about Cline’s longtime friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger. It includes Cline’s hits such as “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” and “Walking After Midnight.” The show was a sellout production for HTC in 2010 and will again feature Shannon Gibson Brown as Patsy Cline and Jenny Howren as Louise. The Treasures of the Earth Gem and Jewelry Show will take place from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 14 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 15-16 at Richmond Raceway. The show features estate, classic, handcrafted and fashion jewelry made from a variety of metals, as well as precious and semi-precious gemstones, beads, pearls, crystals and more. The Richmond Funny Bone, located at Short Pump Town Center, will present comedian Jay Phillips at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sept. 14, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sept. 15 and at 7 p.m. Sept. 16. A native of Washington, D.C., Phillips got his first big break as the co-host of Baltimore’s WXYZ morning radio show. He has appeared on Comedy at the 420, HBO Def Comedy Jam, BET Comic View, STARZ 1st Amendment and others. His film credits include “Semi-Pro,” “Baby Mama” and “Prom Night.” Tickets are $12 to $15. The Shady Grove Coffeehouse will open its 18th season with musician Jackie Frost at 8 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 11105 Cauthorne Rd. in Glen Allen. Frost has fronted several of her own groups and collaborated with Among Friends. She’ll be joined by instrumentalist Doug Hepler. Also performing are Gene and Gayla Mills and the Fireflies. The Mills’ play new roots music featuring Gene’s original songs. In 2015 they formed The Fireflies with Barry Lawson and Kent Ippolito. North Park Library will present “Star Trek and NASA” from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Star Trek debuted in September 1966 and although it was canceled after just three seasons, it is now widely considered one of the most popular and influential television series of all time. Walkerton Tavern, 2892 Mountain Rd., will present “Remembering the Great War: Meuse-Argonne Offensive” from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Standing in the records of WWI as the most critical military contribution of the United States to the Allied cause, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive also stands as one of the deadliest battles in all American military history. Historian Michael Thomas will explore the attacks of Pershing’s American Expeditionary Force and share the vivid experiences of the Doughboys who made them. Admission is free. Shawn Mullins will perform at 8 p.m. at The Tin Pan, 8982 Quioccasin Rd. After a series of indie record releases, Mullins’ breakthrough came in 1998 when his album Soul’s Core shot him to fame on the strength of its Grammy-nominated No. 1 hit, “Lullaby.” Soon after, his song “Shimmer” was used in the promotion of the 2000 Summer Olympics and was included on the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack. He co-wrote “All in My Head” which was featured in episode one of the hit TV sitcom Scrubs. Mullins’ most recent album “My Stupid Heart” was released in 2015. He now is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Soul’s Core by recording two new versions of the album titled Soul’s Core Revival. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
