The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen’s 2nd Stage season continues with “An Evening of Ladies in Love” featuring Janet Martin at 7 p.m. From bluegrass flat-picking to electric rock and blues, Martin is a fully accomplished guitarist with a signature acoustic sound. A native of Richmond, she has shared the stage with a variety of musicians including John Pine, Warren Zevon, Leon Russell, Jerry Lee Lewis and Aaron Neville. Tickets are $17 to $21. Dorrance Dance will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Alice Jepson Theatre at the University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts. This Bessie-winning company will present three new works: Jungle Blues, Myelination and Three to One. Founded in 2011 by MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and artistic director Michelle Dorrance, Dorrance Dance aims to honor tap dance’s uniquely beautiful history in a new and dynamically compelling context. Quill Theatre will bring Aldous Huxley’s novel, “Brave New World,” to life Feb. 2-17 at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. Set in London in the year AD 2540, “Brave New World” anticipates developments in reproductive technology, sleep-learning, psychological manipulation, and classical conditioning that are combined to profoundly change society. CAT Theatre, 319 N. Wilkinson Rd. in Henrico, will present “The Diviners” by Jim Leonard, Jr., Feb. 2-17. “The Diviners” is the story of a disturbed young man and his friendship with a disenchanted preacher in southern Indiana in the early 1930s. This is CAT Theatre’s contribution to the 2018 Richmond Acts of Faith Festival. Opening night tickets, including reception, are $33 in advance and $35 at the door. Virginia Repertory Theatre will present “Songs from the Soul” Feb. 2-25 at The Children’s Theatre at Willow Lawn. This toe-tapping musical examines the evolution of African American music – from spirituals to jazz and rap – and the essential role this music has played in American life. The performance is approximately one hour (no intermission) and is suggested for ages seven and older. Tickets start at $20. Part of the Acts of Faith Theatre Festival. The Henrico County Department of Community Revitalization will present a free workshop on improving home safety, particularly when aging in place, and saving money when working with a contractor. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Community Room at the Eastern Henrico Government Center, 3820 Nine Mile Rd. Exhibits, hands-on demonstrations and refreshments will be included. The session is part of a workshop series that began in October and will continue through March to help residents maintain and improve their homes. The Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond will broadcast Bolshoi Ballet’s production of “The Lady of Camellias” at 12:55 p.m. in Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music. Pathe Live's Bolshoi Ballet program brings the best Bolshoi Ballet productions direct from Moscow, Russia to cinemas and performing arts centers across the U.S. Each production features behind-the-scenes programming, including interviews with the cast and creative teams, either prior to the start of the production, or during intermission.
