FEB 21Strange’s Florist and Garden Center, 12111 West Broad Street, will host the Virginia Orchid Society’s 14th Annual Orchid Show Feb. 21-23. In addition to the hundreds of orchids on display and for sale, the weekend will feature free workshops and lectures, guided tours, an orchid art exhibit and sale, children’s activities, vendors and free orchid repotting. The workshop “Reconstructing Family: Post-Emancipation Records at the Library of Virginia” will take place at Sandston Library from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The presentation will provide an overview of records created from 1865 to 1880 in the aftermath of the Civil War and how they may be used to find information on individuals. Records include the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, the population schedule of the 1870 federal census, voting records, personal property tax records, and African American church records and newspapers.
