The act would seek funding for non-intrusive inspection systems that are capable of scanning vehicles and cargo at the border, which allows CBP to create detailed images of their interiors, thereby facilitating the detection of fentanyl and other illicit drugs. The legislation also proposes developing an inspection program to increase the seizure of firearms that are being exported from the United States to Mexico.

CBP agents report that a considerable number of firearms are being smuggled from the U.S. to Mexico, which is then used by criminal organizations to support their fentanyl production operations and other violent criminal enterprises.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is used to provide pain relief and as an anesthetic but also a drug that can be highly addictive and has been linked to numerous overdoses and deaths. The Stop Fentanyl at the Border Act is intended to help safeguard the U.S. border and prevent the importation of illicit drugs that may pose a threat to public health and safety.
