The Friends of Sons and Daughters of Ham Cemetery will host a makeup workday on Saturday, Feb. 24 to help reclaim the lower end of the hillside along the Near West End cemetery's historic path and also to plant shrubs to stabilize the hillside.

The organization is an all-volunteer group that works to preserve and enhance the historic Henrico cemetery at 7001 Chandler Drive, which is in immediate need of restoration after nearly 70 years of isolation from its caretakers.

Volunteers are being sought for the effort, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers will help in a variety of areas, including backfilling topsoil in wattles created on earlier workdays, planting small shrubs (including mountain laurel, wild azalea, and other native plants to anchor the hillside), and raking leaves over repaired area to create natural mulch.
