The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking public input – by Wednesday, Aug. 23 – about safety and operational issues that exist along two heavily traveled corridors in Henrico County: Patterson Avenue and Chamberlayne Road.

The agency is studying a 4.2-mile segment of Patterson Avenue from Three Chopt Road in the Near West End to Pump Road in the Far West End and a 1.2-mile stretch of Chamberlayne Road from Azalea Avenue at the Richmond city line to I-95.

The purpose of each study is to identify ways to improve safety and accessibility for non-vehicular commuters while also easing congestion, increasing capacity and managing transportation demand.

The surveys (available here for the Patterson Avenue corridor and here for the Chamberlayne Road corridor) are the final part of the first phase of each potential set of projects.

Phase 2 – during which officials will evaluate preliminary design options, conduct public outreach efforts and obtain feedback before selecting preferred options – will begin for each project next month and run through the end of the year.

The third and final phase for each effort is expected to encompass the first seven months of next year and involve the development and refinement of preferred alternatives, the preparation of cost estimates and investment strategies, and the formation of risk assessments.
