Virginia’s job openings rate rose in April 2024 to 6.3%, up from 5.4% in March, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ April 2024 Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.

The seasonally adjusted data for April showed a net increase of 4,000 hires in Virginia over the month with a 6% increase compared to five years earlier. The number of U.S. hires was little changed at 8.1 million in April.

Virginia's hires-per-job-opening rate fell to 0.61 in April, while the national rate increased. The Virginia rate of total job separations, which includes quits, rose to 3.7% in April 2024, up from 3.2% in March 2024. The U.S. rate of total separations didn't change much, registering 3.4% in April.

According to the report, an estimated 100,000 workers quit jobs from Virginia employers in April 2024, with the number of quits unchanged from March.

The number of layoffs and discharges in Virginia was unchanged in April 2024 at 44,000, with this number down by a quarter over the year and by 12 percent compared to five years earlier.
