The Virginia War Memorial will commemorate Patriot Day Sept. 11 with a special livestream ceremony to honor and remember those who died during the terrorist attacks of 2001.
The designated national day of mourning will honor the memory of the 2,997 persons who died, as well as the more than 6,000 persons injured as a result of the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon in Virginia, the World Trade Center in New York, and the downed aircraft in Pennsylvania, Sept. 11, 2001.
The ceremony will be held near a special VWM exhibit that includes a piece of Pentagon wall damaged in the attack, located in the Paul and Phyllis Galanti Education Center in Richmond.
Following the ceremony the Virginia War Memorial documentary film, A New Century. A New War will be shown. The 30-minute film chronicles the memories and emotions surrounding the 9/11 attacks as experienced by Virginia veterans and family members. Dr. Clay Mountcastle, VWM director and noted military historian, will host and provide commentary.
The event will take place online only from 7 to 8 p.m.; there is no charge to view the ceremony and film. Students, veterans, and the general public are encouraged to view the ceremony online at http://vawarmemorial.org/events/patriotday2020.
