Table of Contents

The Virginia War Memorial will host three free professional development opportunities for teachers in the state this summer.

The Virginia War Memorial 2023 Summer Teacher Institutes, tailored to middle and high school teachers, will be held at the VWM site in downtown Richmond during June and July. The institutes aim to enhance teaching skills and offer resources for educators. Participants will have the chance to learn the latest research and writing techniques for more effective teaching using primary sources.

The first institute, "Connecting Students to History: A Workshop on Research, Writing, and Photography," will be held on Wednesday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The second, "Peace With Honor: An In-Depth Look at the War in Vietnam," will span three days, from Tuesday, June 20 to Thursday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. (This institute coincides with the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and will provide educators with a thorough understanding of the conflict's impact on America. Historians and others who witnessed the war will share their insights.)

The final institute, "Virginia and the Great War," will explore World War I and its effect on the lives of Virginians during a three-day period from Tuesday, July 11 to Thursday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

Pre-registration is required. All attendees will receive lunch, materials, and resources, and will be eligible for recertification points. For details or to register, visit https://vawarmemorial.org/learn/schoolteachers/professionaldevelopment/.
