Virginia State Police to target violations on I-95 May 16-17

Table of Contents

The Virginia State Police is launching its Operation DISSrupt initiative this month, targeting four causes of fatal and serious injury crashes along the I-95 corridor.

The May 16-17 campaign will focus on enforcement of violations involving distracted driving, impaired driving, speed, and seat belt usage, with an aim to prevent any fatal crashes on the interstate during the two-day period. (The first letter of each of the four offenses combine to help create the DISSrupt moniker.) Officials also hope to reduce by at least 10% the total number of crashes on Virginia interstates during the year.

A similar operation Jan. 10-11 on I-95 resulted in 120 drivers being cited for reckless driving, 117 being cited for speeding, 33 being cited for violating Virginia’s “Hands Free” law, and 25 drivers and passengers being cited for seatbelt violations (including one improperly restrained child). There were no fatal crashes along the interstate during the enforcement period.

This month's initiative will occur throughout all 179 miles of I-95 in the state.
