Virginia State Police begin 'Operation CARE' to reduce Memorial Day crashes, fatalities

Operation CARE begins May 24 and will continue through midnight May 27. All available state police troopers and supervisors will be on patrol through the holiday weekend to help keep traffic moving safely, according to the state police.

During the 2023 Memorial Day weekend, nine people people lost their lives in car accidents in Virginia. Last year during Operation CARE, 771 people were cited for seatbelt violations, among other safety violations. Police also issued 136 citations statewide for child restraint violations.

To date in 2024, 294 adults, teenagers, and children have died in traffic crashes in Virginia. VSP Superintendent Col. Gary T. Settle urged drivers to slow down, buckle up, avoid distractions, and drive sober and encouraged parents to talk with their teenagers and young adult drivers about safe driving behaviors.
