Virginia Police begin using new alert system for missing children

Table of Contents

The new alert is one of six different alert types that can be issued by the police department. The other five are Amber Alerts, Senior Alerts, Critically Missing Adult Alerts, Missing Person with Autism Alerts, and Blue Alerts.

In order for a CODI alert to be issued, the child must be 17 years old or younger and currently enrolled in secondary school in Virginia. The child's whereabouts must also be unknown, and their disappearance must be under suspicious circumstances that pose a credible threat to their safety. Additionally, there must be sufficient information available to disseminate to the public to assist in locating the child.

The primary difference between the AMBER Alert and the CODI Alert, according to police, is that the CODI Alert may be issued whether a child was believed to have been abducted or not, while AMBER Alerts are only issued when an abduction is believed to have occurred.
