Virginia joins antitrust action seeking to break up Live Nation, Ticketmaster

The lawsuit alleges that Live Nation and Ticketmaster have abused their market power to stifle innovation, drive up prices for consumers and harm artists and venues. The antitrust action accuses Live Nation of using its extensive network of amphitheaters to force artists to select Live Nation, instead of its rivals, as a promoter, thereby maintaining its promotions monopoly.

The coalition further alleges that the companies have locked up venues through restrictive long-term, exclusive agreements and threats that venues will lose access to Live Nation-controlled tours and artists if they sign with a rival ticketer. The antitrust action seeks civil penalties for Virginia and the other plaintiffs, as well as other relief, and also calls for the divestiture of Ticketmaster.

“Live Nation and Ticketmaster’s stronghold over the live entertainment industry has harmed artists, venues, and small businesses, leaving consumers with less choice and exorbitant fees,” said Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares. “Virginia consumers and businesses deserve a free marketplace for products, services, and ideas – and breaking up Ticketmaster and Live Nation will allow for competition and innovation to return to the live entertainment industry.”
