Virginia fifth in Peace Corps volunteers in 2023

Table of Contents

During FY23, 76 Virginians served with the Peace Corps. Since the program was founded in 1961, more than 8,462 Virginians have volunteered with the organization, through which they  work alongside community members on locally-driven projects.

“I am grateful to all the states and communities across the U.S. represented on this list for inspiring the powerful sense of service that has led so many to join the Peace Corps,” Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn said in a statement. “While abroad, Peace Corps Volunteers share their full selves – including a bit of the hometowns that helped shape who they are – with the communities they serve. And everyone benefits when those experiences are as richly diverse as our nation and everyone who calls it home.”

Virginia has consistently ranked in the top 10 states for volunteer-producing states since 2009.

Applications for the Peace Corps are now open through March 1 for volunteers who can begin their global journeys by mid-2024.
