Virginia Credit Union employees are making sure that more students will start school with the supplies they need to succeed.

VACU employees filled more than 200 backpacks for students through the YMCA Bright Beginnings Program, and they collected enough supplies to fill an additional 50 bags.

Through its community programs, the YMCA of Greater Richmond identifies students who would benefit from help with the cost of needed school supplies and backpacks. Virginia Credit Union delivered the backpacks and supplies to the Downtown YMCA on Friday, Aug. 10.

VACU employees worked from suggested school supply lists for students in grades 1-8. Each backpack cost approximately $15 to fill, and employees pitched in with donations of pencils and pens, glue sticks, notebooks, erasers and many other items.

“New school supplies can give a real boost to students’ confidence and readiness to learn,” said Todd Feldman, Virginia Credit Union's chief marketing officer. “Our employees recognize how the YMCA Bright Beginnings program can help these students get off to a good start.”

As in previous years, Virginia Credit Union employees are also volunteering to join students from Bright Beginnings for organized shopping trips for new school clothes and shoes.
