In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and public-gathering restrictions, very few spots locally can claim an increase in visitors this March when compared with the same month last year.

But one can: the Virginia Capital Trail.

The trail, which connects Richmond to Williamsburg, witnessed an increase of 65 percent in usage during March when compared with March 2019, according to trail officials. The greatest user jump occurred along the Greensprings section near Williamsburg, which witnessed an increase of 81 percent.

Next was the Four Mile Creek section in Varina, near Dorey Park, which experienced a jump of 62 percent. Officials believe people are drawn to the trail for its open spaces and a chance to get outside, relieve stress and maintain their physical and emotional health.

Capital Trail e-counters (trail counters set in designated areas to collect usage data) recorded the user increases.

“We are excited to see so many people practicing social distancing and enjoying outdoor activity on the Virginia Capital Trail,” said Cat Anthony, executive director of the trail. “We know how valuable it is for people, especially when dealing with stressful situations, to find solace and connection in outdoor activity.

“We ask that visitors practice self- responsibility and to continue to follow Governor Northam’s and CDC guidelines, maintain a social distance of six feet, stay home if you feel sick, and to avoid congested areas, groups of more than 10, and peak hours (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.).”
