VDOT planning improvements to Parham Road/I-64 interchange

Improvements are coming to a congested Henrico interchange, but they will take a few years.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is planning to make modifications to the Parham Road/Interstate 64 interchange in the West End – a busy corridor that has seen a pattern of rear-end and angle collisions, according to the agency.

The project, funded through the agency's Interstate Operations and Enhancement Program, is estimated to cost about $14.3 million, begin in the spring of 2028 and take about a year to be completed, according to VDOT officials.

To help alleviate accidents that occur as vehicles exiting I-64 westbound onto northbound Parham Road attempt to quickly merge left in order to turn left onto Mayland Drive shortly after the exit, the project will add a traffic signal on Parham at the end of the ramp, as well as a second lane to the ramp (from which drivers will be able to turn either left or right). The light will eliminate the need for traffic exiting I-64 to merge onto Parham Road with competing traffic.

To alleviate the back-ups that frequently occur on northbound Parham as vehicles wait to turn left onto westbound I-64, the existing left-turn lane will be lengthened, according to VDOT spokesperson Lorena Arias.

The project also will add an additional right-hand turn lane (about 150 feet in length) on the ramp from eastbound I-64 to Parham Road.
