Drivers won’t experience any further traffic impacts from the ongoing Airport Drive project at I-64 in Eastern Henrico, Virginia Department of Transportation officials announced JaAn. 26.

“For drivers, the work will appear complete,” said VDOT Richmond District Construction Engineer Robert Poutier. “However, there are items left to address. These should not cause major impacts and will be completed by October 2022.”

As part of the project, the two bridges on I-64 east and west over Airport Drive were fully replaced, which increased the vertical height clearance on Airport Drive. The existing full cloverleaf interchange also was converted to a partial cloverleaf interchange to reduce weaving traffic onto Airport Drive from I-64 and increase efficiency.

New signalized median crossovers on Airport Drive were implemented to facilitate the interchange reconfiguration.

“The new, long-lasting structures will give travelers headed to and from the Richmond International Airport a much more efficient trip, and will better accommodate taller vehicles on Airport Drive beneath I-64,” Poutier said.

The $35 million project began February 2019 is under budget.
