VDOT completes pedestrian improvements at Parham Road-Brook Road intersection

The Virginia Department of Transportation recently completed a pedestrian accommodations project to enhance safety and accessibility at the intersection of East Parham Road and Brook Road in Henrico County.

The intersection improvements include new curb ramps with detectable warning surfaces and pavement markings on the west leg of the intersection. Traffic signal head replacements, high visibility signal back plates, pedestrian signal heads and accessible pedestrian signal devices were also installed as part of the intersection upgrade.

The APS devices enhance communication with audible direction to pedestrians who are blind or visually impaired. The device emanates a “locate tone” so that pedestrians can be guided to the push button by the sound. The APS also provides the pedestrian with audible “wait” and “cross” commands when activated.

“The upgrade is well positioned to benefit residents and visitors of St. Joseph’s Villa,” said VDOT’s Richmond District Project Delivery Engineer Ron Hobson. The Villa is home to a number of residents who have physical disabilities and who are wheelchair-bound.

Work began on the project in September; it cost about $80,000.
