VDH clarifies: Only 2 people in Henrico have died from COVID-19 this month

The Virginia Department of Health has reported 34 COVID-19-related deaths in Henrico County in July – but it also has reported just two.

Confused?

The discrepancy results from the fact that of the deaths connected by the agency this month to the virus, only two actually occurred in July; the others occurred weeks or months ago but were attributed to the virus upon examination of death records this month.

Henrico’s total death count from the virus is 175, and its seemingly odd increase this month – while other virus-related numbers, including hospitalizations, remained relatively stable – caught some observers off-guard.

Data provided by the VDH to the Citizen at the publication’s request clarified the matter.

The only two deaths from the virus to occur in Henrico in July took place July 1 and 4. Twelve deaths occurred in June, according to the agency, and 33 in May.

The first 128 deaths occurred in March and April.

Almost exactly half of the county’s COVID-related deaths – 87 to be exact – occurred in people 80 or older. Another 43 occurred in those in their 70s, while 34 occurred in those in their 60s. Eight people in their 50s have died from the virus in Henrico, as have two in their 40s. The age of one of the deceased is not known, according to VDH.
