VDEM advises Virginia residents to prepare for hurricanes

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has declared the week of May 15-19 as Hurricane Preparedness Week, emphasizing the importance of preparedness for the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season, which officially begins June 1.

"It is never too early to prepare for the impact of tropical weather," said Shawn Talmadge, Sstate coordinator at VDEM. "Tropical systems are a statewide concern, not just a coastal concern. All Virginians need to be prepared."

VDEM has issued a number of tips for before, during, and after severe weather events:

  1. Make a plan: Pre-planning evacuation routes and determining safe locations in advance will facilitate faster and smoother evacuations. Establishing communication strategies and reunion plans for family members is essential.
  2. Make a kit: Assembling an emergency kit containing essential supplies such as food, water, and other necessities to last for at least 72 hours is crucial. Consider the specific needs of family members, including seniors, infants, and pets.
  3. Prepare your home: Taking proactive measures to secure your home is essential. Clearing drains and gutters, securing loose objects, and covering doors and windows are vital steps. Additionally, checking the battery in carbon monoxide detectors is recommended.
  4. Purchase or renew flood insurance: Waiting until a storm is imminent is ill-advised, as it typically takes up to 30 days for a flood insurance policy to take effect. It is important to note that separate policies may be required for wind and flood damage, as regular homeowners insurance policies do not cover these risks.
  5. Know your evacuation zone: VDEM has established evacuation zones for coastal regions to simplify the process of determining whether residents should evacuate or shelter at home in emergencies. Citizens can find their evacuation zones by visiting vaemergency.gov/know-your-zone/.
  6. Stay informed: To receive up-to-date information, sign up for emergency alerts from local offices of emergency management (including Henrico County's emergency alert system). Staying connected with reliable sources is crucial during severe weather events.
