VBCF honors advocates, kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month Oct. 1 by hosting its inaugural More Than a Pink Ribbon Awards Luncheon at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Dr. Clifford L. Deal III, VBCF’s board president and a breast surgeon at Richmond Surgical, presented the awards.

Dr. George Knaysi, Jr., who in 1973 established the practice that became known as the Richmond Surgical Group, was presented with the Sherry Kohlenberg Lifetime Achievement in Healthcare Award for his work focusing on cutting-edge techniques for diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. WTVR Channel 6, represented by General Manager Stephen Hayes and anchor Reba Hollingsworth, anchor, won the Community Champion Award for Buddy Check 6, a weekly segment with educational stories about breast cancer and resources.

Del. Kirk Cox, speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, won the Legislative Impact Award for sponsoring legislation to create the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation pink ribbon license plate in Virginia.
