A Varina store sold a $1-million Virginia Lottery ticket recently.

Melvin Childress, of Petersburg, was on his way home from work when he stopped at the Fas Mart at 2650 New Market Road in Varina for a drink. While he was there, he decided to buy a Power 10s ticket from the Virginia Lottery.

When he got home and scratched the ticket, he discovered that he’d just won the game’s $1 million top prize.

“I couldn’t believe it!” he told Lottery officials. “It’s something I never thought would happen, and it did!”

Childress had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize in annual payments over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $640,205 before taxes. He selected the cash option.

He’s not the only winner: the store receives a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Power 10s is one of dozens of scratchers available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $10 up to $1,000,000. This is the second top prize claimed in Power 10s, which means there is one more $1 million winning ticket unclaimed.

The odds of winning the top prize in this game are more than one in a million – one in 1,672,800, to be exact. The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 3.51.
