The Varina Ruritan Club presented its yearly community awards – honoring a Varina citizen, club member, Henrico Fire, and Henrico Police official – during its Nov. 14 meeting.

The Henrico Firefighter of the Year Award went to Sean Anderson, a Henrico firefighter serving Eastern Henrico since 2013.

The Henrico Policeperson of the Year Award was presented to Matthew Murray, who has served the Varina/Highland Springs area for the past 5 years.

The Varina First Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Sherman Burwell, the owner/operator of Lotsey and Hardy Tire Company for more than 40 years.

The club awarded its Varina Ruritan Club Member of the Year Award to Tommy Harlow, a longtime member who donates a significant amount of his time to the club’s efforts in the community.

Each year, the Ruritan Club also donates money to the Henrico Division of Fire to support the purchase of smoke alarms for citizens whose homes don't have them. This year, the club appropriated $750 for the cause, and retired firefighter and associate club member Pop Harding presented the check.
