The Varina Ruritan Club last month honored four people as part of its annual award dinner and reception.

The club named Rocky Motley its Police Person of the Year; Troy Barnes its Fire Person of the Year; Dot Gay its First Citizen of Varina; and Buddy Whitlow its Varina Ruritan of the Year.

At the event, held at its facility on Recreation Road, Ruritan Club members also presented Assistant Henrico Fire Chief Henry Rosenbaum with 220 smoke alarms with batteries as part of an annual gift it has made for years. The group has donated about 6,700 fire alarms during the past two decades through a project started by the Ruritan Club's Tom "Pop" Harding, pictured at right with Rosenbaum.

Henrico Fire officials have checked and helped protect more than 500 homes this year through a program whereby "light duty" firefighters who are recovering from injuries go door-to-door to check on older homes and elderly citizens. The efforts of the Varina Ruritan members and other civic groups help ensure that the Division of Fire has enough smoke alarms to donate to those who are in need.

Members of the Varina Women's Club, their families and guests joined the Ruritans and police and firefighters at the event last month.
