The Varina Ruritan club presented its annual awards Dec. 13 to honor a Henrico Police officer, Henrico firefighter and its “First Citizen of Varina.”
Henrico firefighter Brad Bishop (of Station 18’s B-Shift) was named Firefighter of the Year. He achieved CDP rank career firefighter.
Henrico Police officer Michael Marshall was named Police Officer of the Year. He’s been a Henrico officer since January 2013 and formerly served in the Petersburg Police Department.
Sandra “Pinky” Dowdy, a lifelong Varina resident and founder of Varina Rising Stars 4-H club in 1985, was named the First Citizen of Varina. She is a longtime member of Hardy Central Baptist Church in Varina and a two-time grand marshal of the Varina Toy Parade.
