Three years after starting Red Poppy Pickin’ in Hanover County, Varina High School graduate Chelsea Hooper has opened a new storefront location for her business at West Broad Marketplace in Short Pump.

Hooper held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the store Oct. 13.

Hooper, 24, began scrapbooking and making coaster sets at 19, then taught herself how to reupholster furniture. Soon, she was painting furniture, designing custom orders and attending craft shows.

In 2015, she opened a storefront in Mechanicsville and named it after the favorite color of her grandmother (who had died six months earlier) and a French flower, in honor of her favorite style of furniture.

After expanding from a 2,000-square-foot space to a 10,000-square- foot location, she opened a second storefront in Chesterfield last year. Her locations carry a variety of home goods that she and other artisans make.
