Varina High School will host a dedication ceremony to formally celebrate the renaming of its stadium and field house Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
The stadium will be named for the late James E. Dawkins, a former student and one of the first Black football players at Varina who also worked as a custodian at the school for years. He died last January.
The field house will be named for Woodrow G. Sanderford, also a VHS graduate who returned as an employee in 1963 and still is actively involved with the football program.
