A Varina High School junior placed second in the 2022 Congressional Art Competition in Virginia’s 4th District.

Haley Gantz earned the honor for her work titled “Lois Mailou Jones” (pictured). A Prince George County High School student won the competition, and a student from the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School placed third. The winning entry will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year alongside winners from each of the other congressional districts in the nation.

“The talent that comes from our district every year is truly remarkable,” said Fourth District U.S. Representative Donald McEachin. “All of the submissions this year were incredibly beautiful and competitive; however, I would like to congratulate Ms. Gantz on being selected for second place. I commend all of the students who participated in this year’s competition. Finally, I would like to thank our panel of judges, who lent their time and expertise to judge and select this year’s winners.”

All submissions were judged by an independent panel of local artists convened by McEachin, a group that included S. Ross Browne, Taekia Glass, and Sara Ward.
