Varina High School Principal Darin Thompson shared a message to his graduating class that he often shares on morning announcements at school: “You are brilliant, you are phenomenal, you are amazing.”

Students hugged, cheered and cried as Thompson addressed the VHS graduating class at the Richmond Raceway on Tuesday evening.

“I want you to always remember that and to embody those words as you embark upon a new journey in life,” Thompson said.

Student Jalen Murphy told his class that despite the predicaments over the past year, God doesn’t introduce obstacles that can’t be overcome.

“This class has been through so much that some people don't even understand,” Murphy said. “We didn’t even have a chance to even go to school for our last senior year and experience everything we wanted to.”

School Board member Alicia Atkins, who represents the Varina District, declared the VHS class graduates.

“Your diplomas will represent your will and your success,” Atkins said. “I want you to move forward thoughtfully, gracefully, knowing that you are loved and that you have a journey that is beautiful — and it's all yours.”

Thompson honored 18-year-old Vinshaun Johnson who was killed in a shooting in April. His family was presented with an honorary posthumous diploma.

“One love, one family,” Thompson said. “Blue Devils, we are one.”
