The Varina High School community is mourning the loss of a longtime employee and supporter. James Dawkins, who worked as a custodian at the school and had been a county employee for more than 45 years, died, over the weekend. He was a Varina graduate and former football player and supporter of all things Varina during his career. Online tributes to Dawkins poured in on social media as news of his death spread.

Dawkins was not only a custodian, one man wrote, but "a guidance counselor, a friend and a huge inspiration to us all.”

Another said, "He is a legend in life and at Varina High School!

Wrote another, simply: Dawkins was "A friend to everyone."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
