Two Varina High School employees have tested positive for COVID-19, prompting the school to close through Monday, Aug. 17.

The first positive test result was reported to school system officials Aug. 11 and the second, from an employee who had been in case contact with the first employee, was reported Aug. 12.

“In both instances, the employees began to self-quarantine as a precaution prior to receiving their test results,” school system officials wrote in a message to the school community. “As part of our health-risk mitigation strategy to protect our employees, and to stop any further spread among those who enter the campus, several additional Varina HS staff members have been directed to quarantine at home.”

The school’s campus will reopen for appointments and other school-related business Aug. 18. It will be thoroughly cleaned before that date, officials said.

Anyone who had an appointment or other scheduled meeting at the school will be contacted by school officials to reschedule.
