[maxgallery id="33739"]Varina High School's boys basketball team won the Group 5 state championship yesterday – the first in the school's history – at VCU's Siegel Center, defeating Wakefield 64-60. It was Varina's 22nd straight win and capped a magical season that included five wins against rival Highland Springs, including in the state semifinals.

Junior Tyrese Jenkins led the Blue Devils with 21 points, including three critical free throws down the stretch. Varina trailed by 8 at halftime but toughened in the second half and rebuffed a late Wakefield rally to hold on for the win. The win put an exclamation point on coach Andrew Lacey's five-year tenure at the school, which began with just six wins in his first year.
