Va. Press Association puts Glen Allen headquarters on the market

The Virginia Press Association has put its Henrico headquarters on the market.

VPA, which since 1881 has advocated for newspapers, magazines and a free press in the state, recently listed for sale the 12,780-square-foot office building it built nearly two decades ago (and the three acres on which it sits) at 11529 Nuckols Road in Glen Allen near Wyndham.

The organization intends to rent office space in the same area or in nearby Innsbrook once it has sold the building, VPA President Betsy Edwards told the Citizen Thursday.

“Our staff has shrunk over the past 15 years making it unnecessary for us to stay in 12,000+ [square] ft. building,” Edwards wrote in an email.

The building and the three-acre site were assessed for a total of $1.625 million in January – about $300,000 more than their combined assessment in September 2002, more than a year after construction of the building was completed and a number of months after VPA moved in.

The site includes about 85 parking spots. The facility was one of the first non-residential structures built along that section of Nuckols Road. It has since been joined by the adjacent Grove Park Square business development and a number of other offices and retail developments nearby.

Commonwealth Commercial is the listing agency.

VPA had leased its building’s east wing to an e-training firm for the past five years, Edwards said, but that company moved out several months ago and VPA officials haven’t found another renter to replace it.

VPA advocates in the General Assembly for its members (which also include news websites and a number of affiliate, educational institution and individuals); hosts training and education courses for its members; and hosts an annual news and advertising competition for members, as well as an annual conference. Its website lists eight staff members.

VPA is governed by a 16-member board, including seven board officers.
